Savage Pagers Book Club - Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End (an End in Mind book discussion)

Savage Pagers Book Club - Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End (an End in Mind book discussion)

Join us for a special book discussion of surgeon Atul Gawande's Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, a personal meditation on how we can better live with age-related frailty, serious illness and approaching death.

The waning days of our lives are often spent in institutions where we undergo treatments that won't "cure" us, and diminish our quality of life. Gawande wants us to know that the tragedy of old age and death cannot be fixed by modern medicine.  We need to realize that some people just need comfort, kindness and the ability to die with dignity, and on their own terms.

Copies of the book are currently available for check out at the Savage Library.  No registration required. Use our library catalog to place your hold

This program is part of the Scott-Carver End in Mind initiative. End in Mind is a unique, statewide initiative that tries to destigmatize conversations about dying while encouraging people to live their best lives.
